The Sweat Level


Fitness is an important aspect of our trips and the fitter you are the more easily you will adjust and enjoy yourself. This trip has been assigned a Sweat Level of ‘Easy to Moderate’. Trips with this grading involve activities such as hiking, cycling and kayaking for several hours in duration. Depending on the activity, you may have to carry a small daypack. In preparation of the trip, we recommend you engage in aerobic exercises two or three times a week for three months prior to departure.

When To Go

Montenegro's coast enjoys warm summers and mild winters, like most of the Mediterranean region. Temperatures can reach 29°C in the warmer months of July and August.

Weather varies considerably in the mountainous regions, with the exception of Podgorica which can be warm in the summer. While August temperatures range from 9°C to 23°C, January's minimum temperatures can reach as low as -2°C.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Podgorica, transfer to Skadar Lake

Welcome to Montenegro! Upon arrival in the capital city of Podgorica, make your own way to Skadar Lake. A trip briefing will be held in the evening where you'll be introduced to Montenegro, the group guide, and your fellow Yomads travellers.

Day 2: Kolasin and cycling to Katun Vranjak

Early in the morning, we embark on a boat trip on Skadar Lake, the largest of the Balkans and on the border of both Montenegro and Albania. After breakfast, we'll board the train to Kolasin, crossing ridges, tunnels, and bridges on the way. There's time to relax before hitting the road on a mountain bike trip through Bjelasica's mountains, ending in Katun Vranjak.

Day 3: Hiking around Bjelasica

Today we explore the rolling countryside of Bjelasica on foot, heading up to the highest peak of the region Crna Glava (2139m). Our descent takes us to Biogradska Lake, passing through one of Europe's last jungle regions.

Day 4: Free day Zabjak

The day is free for you to explore Zabjak and its surrounds at your own pace. Our recommendations for the day include:

  • Rafting at Tara Gorge
  • Cycling around Zabjak

Day 5: Hiking in the Durmitor Mountains

A full day of hiking in the Durmitor Mountains takes us through vast forests and meadows to the Planinca Summit. From here, the views of the surrounding rock peaks of the Durmitor massif are stunning. On the way down we'll pass by two mountain lakes, Crno Jezero (black lake) and Zminje Jezero (snake lake).

Day 6: To Cetinje, kayaking on Boka Bay

Today we'll travel to Cetinje, the former capital of Montenegro until 1918. There's time to explore the peaceful town and its buildings before crossing the Lovcen Mountains that separate the Montenegro's interior from the sea. At the top of the mountain range, enjoy the beautiful view down to the Mediterranean Sea. In the afternoon, embark on a sea kayaking trip in the picturesque Kotor Bay.

Day 7: Free day Kotor

Today is free for you to do your own thing, be it exploring the Venetian town of Kotor, taking a refreshing dip in the many waters of the area, or hiking the surrounding area.

Our journey ends after breakfast, leaving you free to head home or to continue the adventure on your own.

The Sweat Level

  • Easy to Moderate
Easy – these are pretty relaxed and are suitable for most fitness levels. Expect though to push a little outside of your comfort zone with the included activities, but they are not for lengthy durations.

Moderate - these will include cycling, walking, kayaking and other activities which will put a sweat on the brow. You should do some pre trip training like going to the gym, jogging, brisk walking or cycling at least 3 times weekly for months before you go to get your fitness level up.

Hardcore - these will include sustained walking or cycling over multiple days and that means you’ll need to get into a great fitness regime before your trip. The best preparation you can do is day walks or cycle trips one a fortnight that build your endurance fitness coupled with some hour long ‘cardio’ workouts up to 3 times a week, and continue this for 3 months before departure.
