They say big things come in small packages; a sentiment that rings true for the sleepy town of Ella nestled deep inside Sri Lanka’s hill country.
While the easy train ride from Kandy is often made by travellers looking to unwind after experiencing the bustle of Sri Lanka’s cities, you’ll be hard pressed to find a village with more serenity than this one.
Whether you plan to use Ella as a home base for exploring the surrounding hills or curling up on the porch of your guest house with a good book, Horton Plains, Nuwara Eliya, delectable home cooked meals and beautiful waterfalls are all within your reach.
Though options are limited and searching is required; funky bars complete with open air decks, bean bag seats and a cosy atmosphere can be found hidden amongst the tea shops on the main street.
Where: South central Sri Lanka.
When to go: Climatically, Sri Lanka has no off season, though rains are more common in the hill areas from July to May.
Hot tip: Travel to Ella Gap where, on a clear day, you can see between the green mountain sides and down nearly 1000m to the coastal plains that reach the Indian Ocean.
